Opportunities in Hedge Funds: Institutional Investor Strategies

SFI Master Class

Hedge funds are an extremely heterogeneous group within the investment funds family, which makes meaningful benchmarking almost impossible. This also raises the question of the extent to which they truly generate alpha and provide portfolio diversification and that of whether the use of hedge funds makes sense at all in a contemporary portfolio context—especially in a rising interest rate environment or in a post-pandemic world. Has hedge funds‘ time passed, or are they on the verge of a renaissance? Are some hedge funds really outstanding, and if so, how can one identify them?

Objectives

In this Master Class, advantages and disadvantages of different hedge fund investment styles are analyzed. Special attention is given to hedge funds as a diversifier for equity and fixed income markets in a rising interest rate environment. The risks and opportunities of this asset class, which is increasingly conquering the private client segment, are investigated. And we discuss the topic of diversification, including the risk of „diworsification“ and how many hedge funds are really needed in a portfolio—and why the performance of hedge fund indices are so depressing.
